Before it became Tower Hamlets Town Hall, this building had alreadylived several lives. Opened to patients in the 18th century as the former RoyalLondon Hospital, it later became part of Whitechapel’s medical history, withconnections to Edith Cavell and Joseph Merrick, better known as the ElephantMan. Today, the Grade II listed building has been brought back into communityuse as the new civic home for the London Borough of Tower Hamlets.
Our role focused on internal builders cleaning, helping preparethe restored historic interiors and new civic spaces for completion andhandover.

Tower Hamlets Town Hall combines the refurbishment of the former Royal London Hospital with a new-build extension to create 26,700 m² of civic office space with capacity for 2,470 staff. The project includes contemporary workspaces, meeting rooms, welfare facilities, a café, council chamber, and public-facing ground floor spaces designed to bring council services together in one place.
On a building with this much history, the clean had to do more than remove dust. It had to help old and new spaces feel like they belonged together.

This was not the sort of project where you run a mop through and call it civic pride. Between restored heritage spaces, new public areas, council chambers, and contemporary office floors, the internal clean had to respect the history of the building while making it feel ready for modern use.
Across the building, the aim stayed simple: remove the last signs of construction without taking any shine off the history.
At Tower Hamlets Town Hall, our internal builders cleaning works helped prepare one of Whitechapel’s most historic buildings for its new role at the centre of civic life. From restored heritage areas to contemporary public spaces, the finish had to respect the past while making the building feel ready for what came next.
